Enslaved in Virginia, Kitty Payne was freed by her owner, after which Kitty and her children settled in Adams County. Two years later, slave catchers snatched the family from their Bear Mountain cabin and took them back to Virginia to be sold. Only with the help of local friends and neighbors was the family finally released.
During the reenactment, some descendents of those involved in the original kidnapping will portray their ancestors. Join us on Saturday, July 24, 4 p.m. at the Elkhorn Inn, 101 South Main Street, Bendersville, PA 17306. (Bring a lawn chair.) For information, contact Debra McCauslin at (717) 528-8553 or dmccauslin@gettysburghistories.com.
Meet Kittys great-great granddaughter. See the kidnappers at Charles Myers Tavern (today the Elkhorn Inn). Learn how Kitty's freedom was denied and regained. |
