Freedom Lies Just North
Tour the Underground Railroad in Adams County’s Quaker Valley

During the years before the Civil War, African Americans of Yellow Hill worked with their Quaker neighbors to help escaping slaves to freedom after fugitives had been guided to Yellow Hill by Gettysburg resident Basil Biggs. On this tour we’ll visit Yellow Hill, where Gettysburg’s African American families found refuge during the Confederate Invasion of 1863, and the mysterious Yellow Hill Cemetery and Church lot. Learn about veterans of the U. S. Colored Troops who were once buried at Yellow Hill, and about the Mathews family and other African Americans who lived nearby. Hear about how Yellow Hill Church was burned to the ground in a deliberate act of racism. Learn about Quakers William and Phebe Wright who, with the help of their Quaker Valley neighbors, helped 1,000 people to freedom. Sit in an 1880’s Quaker Meetinghouse. Visit two of the Pennsylvania sites listed on the National Park Service’s National network to Freedom.
